Hemorrhoids
Explained
Hemorrhoids are basically a problem that includes the veins
that are located around the rectum becoming inflamed and
swollen and often they can be very painful. Both women and men
can end up dealing with hemorrhoids and by the time most people
reach 50, about half of them have dealt with hemorrhoids at
some point in their life.
There are a variety of different veins that are located
around the anus and the rectum. There are internal veins and
external veins and pressure in these veins can lead to
hemorrhoids. Two types of hemorrhoids exist, including external
hemorrhoids and internal hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids
occur on the inside and the external ones occur on the outside
of the body.
You'll find that there are a variety of different risk
factors that can lead to the development of hemorrhoids.
Usually these problems increase the pressure on these veins.
While they are not really causes of hemorrhoids, they are
basically risk factors that can increase your risk for
developing hemorrhoids. Some of the most common risk factors
for developing hemorrhoid problems include getting pregnant,
getting older, straining when going to the bathroom, sitting
for a long time, obesity, high fat diets, diarrhea, anal
intercourse, and constipation.
Just about everyone experiences this problem in a different
way. The symptoms will vary from person to person and some
people may not even end up having symptoms of hemorrhoids. For
many, the symptoms go away in just a couple days. However, the
types of symptoms people deal with can depend on the type of
hemorrhoids that they are dealing with.
For those who are dealing with internal hemorrhoids, often a
symptom that they may have is blood covering their stool that
is bright red, or it may be in the toilet or on their toilet
paper. They can feel full after having a bowel movement and
they may also fee discomfort in the anus as well. Usually these
internal hemorrhoids don't cause a whole lot of pain.
There are different symptoms that can occur when you are
dealing with external hemorrhoids. Usually the external
hemorrhoids can be very painful and people who are dealing with
this type of hemorrhoids often end up dealing with anal itching
and bleeding as well. It can be very painful to sit down when
you are dealing with the external hemorrhoids too.
If you think that you may have a problem with hemorrhoids,
usually it is best to get an evaluation and diagnosis from your
doctor to make sure that this is really the problem, especially
if you are dealing with bleeding from your rectum or blood that
is in your stool. This can be a sign of other problems, so it
is best to have a doctor's opinion. Usually it is fairly easy
to have your hemorrhoids diagnosed.
While hemorrhoids can definitely be quite painful, there are
a variety of treatments available for them and these treatments
usually focus on helping to modify your bowel habits, relieve
the pressure on the area by increasing fluids and fiber, and
helping to relieve the symptoms that you are dealing with.
However, in some extreme cases, you may end up needing to have
a procedure or surgery to deal with the problem.
Often it is pregnant women who have an extremely hard time
with hemorrhoids. When they are carrying their baby, often the
changes in hormones as well as the pressure that the fetus puts
on the area can make the veins enlarge. The veins are also put
under quite a bit of pressure when pregnant women give birth as
well, which can lead to problems with hemorrhoids. Usually
women who have hemorrhoids during pregnancy do heal up
later.
There are things that you can easily do to help to prevent
yourself from having to deal with hemorrhoids. One of the best
things that you can do is to make sure you go to the bathroom
as soon as you can when you feel the need to. Also, making sure
that you don't have to strain by keeping stool soft can really
help. Increasing water and fiber in your diet is important and
increasing exercise can help as well.
